Discover the Beauty and History of Camp Richardson Resort on Lake Tahoe’s South Shore

Nestled on the picturesque southern shore of Lake Tahoe, Camp Richardson Resort offers a unique blend of natural beauty and timeless charm. With a history dating back to the late 1800s, this iconic resort has been a beloved destination for generations. Here’s a glimpse into the rich history and enchanting ambiance of Camp Richardson.

The Camp’s Beginning

Camp Richardson Resort’s story begins with the Washoe people, who occupied the land in and around what we now know as Camp Richardson Resort for at least two thousand years. Prior to gold-rush settlement, the indigenous Washoe lived a nomadic hunter-gatherer lifestyle, with beautiful Lake Tahoe serving as their cultural center. During the summers, the Washoe were, and still are, known to camp and fish in an area just steps away from what is now Camp Richardson Resort, along Taylor Creek. *

In 1884, following decades of settlement, Alonzo W. Richardson, a Civil War veteran, arrived at Lake Tahoe. With a deep appreciation for the area’s unmatched beauty, Richardson recognized what the Washoe had already figured out centuries before: the potential for a tranquil and scenic retreat. He established a rustic summer camp in 1924, which, with the help of nearby camps, gradually evolved into the cherished resort we know today.

Throughout the years, Camp Richardson Resort has welcomed countless visitors, from nature enthusiasts and families seeking adventure, to couples in search of a romantic getaway. Each guest contributes to the resort’s vibrant history, leaving their own mark on this timeless place.
